Classroom Management Week 1 Day 1- English 9th grade
On their first day of 9th grade English, the teacher began the period not in the classroom but at the door greeting the students by name and individually stating the expectations and the assignment with the catchy phrase, “Silently Start the Survey”. His approach puts him in charge of his classroom because he states what is expected of them starting with their very first encounter. One way I would improve on his approach would be to greet them with a smile. He also establishes himself as an English teacher willing to use every moment to teach, by using an alliteration for his instructions. Once his students have entered the class, he manages both their literacy progress as well as their behavior by walking up and down the rows, giving verbal warnings, assisting any student in need of extra attention, reminding students to track the speaker and extending positive reinforcements when the class is on task and following procedures. Not only does he explain the assignment verbally, but he also models behavior and procedures to demonstrate his standards and expectations. The first homework assignment he gives out is for students to buy a binder and complete a “getting to know you” page. He humanizes his students in both these regards because not only does he state a student can come to him privately if they are unable to afford materials, but he makes the first homework assignment about them. This shows that he will care about them and his classroom is a safe space for them to learn and grow.
I also appreciated the various teaching styles he used in his lessons such as whole and small group and the collaborative reading of the syllabus with the teacher being the main reader and the students filling in the blanks in places he stops. This not only allows for further student engagement as it feels like a game, but also allows the teacher to know who in his class is paying attention. When the bell finally rang, he informed them on the procedures for dismissal. This lets the students know it is the teacher that dismisses them and not the bell.
